TAB wins Melbourne Cup for 12th consecutive year

TAB has won the Melbourne Cup for the 12th consecutive year.

TAB took $67 million dollars of Australians’ hard earned money to win the race convincingly from SportsBet, who came in 12 lengths behind at $52 million dollars. Three year old gelding tomwaterhouse.com was annoyingly persistent and snatched third with $21 million dollars.

One of the most competitive Melbourne Cup fields of recent times was assembled for the 2014 edition of the race that stops the mortgage repayments of a nation.

International raiders Bet365 and William Hill were prominent early, while local stayer Sportingbet ran well midfield but faded late. Luxbet and Betfair never looked a chance and fell behind early while Tomwaterhouse.com missed the jump before a publicity blitz gave it an early lead.

However, short-priced favourite TAB never looked in trouble and it ran away from the rest of the field on the back of wagers from thousands of unlucky punters across the country.

TAB’s connections were ecstatic with the win which, frankly, was never in doubt.

“We’d like to thank all the casual punters and the problem gamblers alike who’ve risked their financial security yet again to make this win happen” said TAB chairperson Paula Dwyer.

“Throwing away money that could have been spent on your life dream is what made our dream of embarrassingly large Christmas bonuses come true,” Ms Dwyer said.

“We’ll definitely be back next year, that’s a sure bet.”
